For everyday decision-making, compare similar products and choose the one with less added sugar per serving, while also checking fiber and protein. For example, flavored yogurt with lower added sugar but also low protein may not be the best swap. The goal is not to eliminate sweetness entirely, but to avoid products where added sugar is a major ingredient and where a single serving delivers a large share of your daily intake.

The ingredient list is the reality check. Ingredients are listed by weight, from most to least. If sugar (or multiple forms of sugar) appears near the top, the product is likely sweetened heavily. The same applies to refined flours and oils.
