They are opportunistic insect-eaters that patrol walls, ceilings, and window frames where small flying insects gather. Warm surfaces around light fixtures and electronics can also attract insects, creating a reliable feeding route. Geckos do not need to “move in” to benefit; a single wall near a porch light can provide enough prey for repeated visits. Season and temperature matter. In warmer months, insect activity rises and geckos follow the food supply. In cooler periods, they may retreat to sheltered gaps, then reappear on mild evenings. Their ability to cling to smooth surfaces lets them exploit vertical spaces that many predators cannot. For homeowners, seeing a gecko is often a sign that the building offers easy access points and a steady stream of insects drawn by light, humidity, and indoor warmth.
How moths and other insects get inside
Moths are among the most common nighttime visitors because many species navigate using light cues. Bright bulbs near doors and windows can pull them toward the building, and once they reach the frame, small gaps do the rest. Common entry points include worn weatherstripping, loose window screens, unsealed cable holes, and door thresholds with uneven contact. Even a tiny opening can be enough for small moths, midges, and mosquitoes. Indoor conditions can also make a home more attractive. Humid rooms, stored fabrics, and pantry goods can support different insect groups. Not all moths are fabric pests, but some species can lay eggs in undisturbed textiles or dry foods. Outdoor landscaping matters too: dense plants near walls provide shelter, and standing water increases insect populations that then drift toward lights. When insects concentrate around a home, geckos often follow, using the same access routes and hunting the insects that slip indoors or hover near the exterior lights.
A practical look at the gecko–insect link
The relationship is simple: insects cluster where conditions suit them, and geckos patrol those clusters. Around a typical home, the highest insect density is often near lights, window corners, and areas with airflow that carries scents from kitchens or trash bins. Geckos learn these “routes” and may return to the same spots night after night. Their hunting is mostly sit-and-wait with short bursts of movement, which is efficient when prey is predictable. This link can be useful to understand rather than fear. A gecko on an exterior wall may reduce the number of insects that reach the door. Indoors, a gecko may consume small moths and flies, but its presence also signals that insects are getting in. If you see geckos frequently, it is worth checking whether the home’s lighting and sealing practices are unintentionally creating a feeding corridor. Observing where the gecko appears—near a specific window, a balcony light, or a bathroom vent—often points directly to the insect source and the entry gap.
Lighting choices that change the night scene
Outdoor lighting is one of the fastest ways to influence insect traffic. Many insects are more attracted to bright, cool-toned lights. Switching to warmer color temperatures, using shielded fixtures that direct light downward, and reducing unnecessary brightness can lower the number of insects circling doors and windows. Motion sensors can also help by limiting the time lights stay on, which reduces the “beacon” effect. Placement matters as much as bulb type. A light mounted directly above a door pulls insects to the entry point; moving it a short distance away can shift insect activity away from the seal line. Indoors, keeping curtains closed near bright windows at night can reduce insects that gather on the glass and then slip through small gaps. These changes do not eliminate insects entirely, but they can reduce the concentrated swarms that make geckos and moths more noticeable around the home.
Sealing, screens, and storage that actually work
A targeted home check can reduce both insects and the geckos that follow them. Start with screens: repair tears, ensure frames sit flush, and use finer mesh where tiny insects are a problem. Replace worn weatherstripping around doors, and add a door sweep if light is visible under the door at night. Seal gaps around pipes, air-conditioner lines, and cable entries with appropriate sealant, and check vents for intact covers. Inside, focus on what insects can use as food or shelter. Store dry goods such as flour, grains, and pet food in sealed containers, and clean pantry shelves where crumbs collect. For textiles, avoid leaving rarely used fabrics in open piles; use closed bins and keep storage areas dry. Reduce humidity in bathrooms and laundry areas with ventilation and timely repairs of leaks. These steps reduce the insect baseline, which in turn reduces the hunting incentive for geckos to patrol indoors.
Living alongside geckos responsibly
If a gecko gets indoors, the most practical approach is calm removal and prevention. Open a window or door to the outside, turn off indoor lights and leave an exterior light on to draw insects outward, and give the gecko a clear path. If needed, use a container-and-card method to guide it out without harm. Avoid sticky traps, which can injure small animals and create cleanup problems. Long-term, the goal is to manage the conditions that bring insects close to living spaces. Keep outdoor areas tidy, reduce standing water, and avoid leaving food scraps accessible. If geckos are appearing in large numbers or you suspect a structural issue, a building inspection can identify gaps and moisture sources. In most cases, geckos are not a sign of a serious problem by themselves; they are a visible indicator of nighttime insect activity and of how a home’s lighting and sealing choices shape the local ecosystem.
