History and background
National Day is celebrated on December 16th and 17th each year. December 16th marks the anniversary of Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa assuming power in 1961. He is considered the founder of modern Bahrain. Although Independence Day was originally celebrated on August 15th, 1971, it was later moved to December due to the summer heat, and December became the official date for national celebrations. Cities decorated: With flags and national lights. Family events: Held in malls and public parks. It is an official paid holiday in both the public and private sectors. Extra time off is often granted if the holiday falls on a weekend. Flag and Slogans The Bahraini flag is flown at all institutions. National slogans expressing loyalty and belonging are used, such as: “Our Bahrain is one nation” “Manama, the capital of joy” (the slogan varies by year) Community Participation Schools and universities organize national events.
