Built meticulously over fifteen chapters, this novel appears as if it's pages missing from One Thousand and One Nights. It narrates the story of residents from a mythical neighborhood in Omdurman, named Zaqzaq by the narrator. These people are unique in their ability to chirp like birds, symbolizing their boundless acceptance of life. However, life becomes complicated due to Zidan, who deviates from the norm and attracts hostility, disturbing the peace of his neighborhood. Zidan, the protagonist, has roots in the Nuba Mountains, is cultured, and has his perspectives, which causes conflict with those wishing to silence him, referred to as 'the group' by the narrator. Throughout the novel, their identity remains unknown; they might be the mafia or individuals linked to security agencies or perhaps a gang intending to plunder the newly discovered archaeological site at an abandoned cinema.

Zidan meets a journalist to whom he confides his situation, leading to a love affair. The novel creatively utilizes this relationship in some chapters. The intriguing chapter titles are quite long, seemingly suggesting that even things meant to be brief, stretch indefinitely in a land with an infinite account in the bank of time. For example, one chapter is titled: "What Cannot Be Concealed or Whispered," and another: "What Can Be Hidden and Lied About," implying an ongoing escape from reality. The novel is rich with emotions, benefiting from the narrative style of very short stories, enriching its content with themes like love, war, tribalism, racism, freedom, and oppression. Although the characters are peculiar, the reality trying to eradicate their existence is even stranger, in a world without conscience where silence is the harshest punishment for conscientious people, and the cruel methods used against them aim to secure the realization of their desires, ensuring their survival and exploitation of people: the silence of living consciences.
