Before Islam, the Levant, known as Al-Sham, was one of the most significant regions of the Byzantine Empire, with its cities being essential religious centers in the ancient East. At the beginning of the Islamic expansion era, the Levant was the heart of the Eastern Roman Empire, holding great importance within it. The idea of conquering the Levant began during the Battle of the Trench when the companions found it difficult to break a rock while digging the trench. They sought the Prophet's help, and he struck the rock with a hammer, announcing, 'In the name of God, God is great, I have been granted the keys of the Levant; indeed, I see its red palaces.'
