To write this unique and enjoyable novel about the life of the artist Vincent van Gogh, Irving Stone had to read the three volumes of letters from van Gogh to his brother, Theo. To trace the artist's path and investigate his life, he acted almost like a spy, snatching details of van Gogh's journey across three countries (the Netherlands, Belgium, and France). He followed him not to find the story that was already widely known, but to uncover another, more passionate story hidden beneath the surface.

Finding this insufficient, Stone resorted to narrating events that were not publicly known, and even failed in his attempts to document some, like the meeting between van Gogh and Cézanne in Paris. Stone was brave in using his imagination to capture the reality of van Gogh's life, confirming for us that a novelist cannot escape the destiny of using fabrication to tell the truth. Thus, a reader finishing this book cannot differentiate between what happened and what didn't, as this novel tells the story of one of the greatest visual artists like never before.
