Although the study of offender behavior and the impact of crime has a long history, how victimization affects victims' lives has not been studied with the same level of attention until recently. Today, policymakers, practitioners, academics, and activists alike have recognized the importance of studying the other half of the crime relationship. Indeed, this is an exciting time in victimology studies—a rapidly growing academic field. Therefore, this book fills a gap in the currently available research.

As we will discuss, this book contains concise chapters covering the fundamentals of victimology. Additionally, it uses a consistent framework throughout to guide the reader while addressing the latest topics in the field. We have tried to include a general framework in each chapter that examines the causes and consequences of specific types of victimization and the responses to them. Our goal was to create a comprehensive yet easily readable work that reviews many types of victimization within a common framework, so that similarities and differences can be readily identified.

Within this framework, we pay special attention to identifying the characteristics of both victims and incidents so that theory can be applied to understand why some people become victims while others remain safe. Although early attempts in victimology focused on identifying victim patterns, the theoretical aspect of the field was overlooked in the early days of criminology. Apart from routine activities theory and lifestyle theory, few theories explicitly identify the causes of victimization.

This does not mean that the field of victimology is devoid of theories—it's just that the theories applied to victimization are largely derived from other fields of study. Therefore, we have included a chapter that discusses these theories. In addition, in each chapter on a specific type of victimization, we identify the causes and how theory can be applied. Knowing this is a crucial first step in preventing and responding to victimization.

We also wanted to include emerging issues in the field of victimology in the book. To this end, each chapter discusses current issues relevant to the chapter's topic and the latest research. For example, the chapter on sexual assault covers intimate partner violence in depth, as well as cyberbullying, identity theft, and human trafficking. Other chapters are entirely devoted to contemporary issues. Specifically, there is a chapter on the victim-offender overlap, a chapter on repeat victimization, a chapter on homicide victims, and chapters on victims with mental illness, incarcerated victims, and victims with disabilities.

We believe that including the latest issues in victimology will expose the reader to topics that are likely to receive the most attention in the coming years. Throughout the book, we include relevant information about victimology around the world. This allows the reader to learn how victimization is defined and measured in different countries and how victims are treated outside the United States. This book covers these topics while highlighting empirical research related to each chapter's issue. Additionally, each chapter uses a 'real-life' example from the news to connect the problems in victimology to current events.
