The history of world literature is rich with numerous examples of writers who wrote in a language other than their native one, either voluntarily or due to political necessity in their home countries. Some wrote in French and others in English, but they were not considered French or English as a result. Modern Algerian literature written in French is distinguished from other Arabic literature in the Arab world by a unique characteristic rarely found elsewhere. This distinction is manifested in a set of complex, intricate properties, born from an inevitable historical process. It then took on a national identity during the period of regaining national sovereignty in the last quarter of the twentieth century. The Algerian novel written in French constituted a distinct cultural and linguistic phenomenon, sparking great debate among critics and scholars. Some considered it an Arabic novel due to its intellectual and social content, while the majority viewed it as an Algerian novel written in French, considering language the sole means by which literature acquires its identity. Furthermore, novel writing in French contributed to the growth of French literature just as it enriched Arabic literature. Therefore, when we examine this unique phenomenon, we are merely providing an idea of the emergence of this literature written in the French language under critical circumstances in Algeria.
