In democratic countries, tolerance is taken for granted. An individual, regardless of differences in appearance, behavior, or language, is viewed with acceptance and is expected to do the same. If any pressure arises that threatens to change this stance, it is considered a violation that destroys individual freedom. While isolationism has prevented integration into foreign societies, Arab culture—both political and social—lacks the concept of tolerance in word and practice. Militant ideologies and traditionalist values have played their part in expelling tolerance from our lives and culture. This book explores the issue in both the Western world and among Arabs.
