This book is one of the posthumous works that support the "discovery" of another Althusser, or the "late Althusser." The book is associated, in both its writing and publication history, with its twin volume, "Initiation to Philosophy for Non-Philosophers." Althusser structures both books, in his own words, as a rewriting of the history of philosophy in an educational style that serves as a summary, preparing the ground for presenting the thesis of the "late Althusser."
