Althusser's book, "To Be a Marxist in Philosophy," is published nearly a quarter-century after its author's death in 1990. The manuscript was completed about a decade and a half before the passing of the author of "Reading Capital" and half a decade before the tragedy that ended his brilliant and controversial intellectual journey in Marxist philosophy. This book is one of the posthumous works that support the "discovery" of another Althusser, or the "late Althusser." The book is associated, in both its writing and publication history, with its twin volume, "Initiation to Philosophy for Non-Philosophers." Althusser structures both books, in his own words, as a rewriting of the history of philosophy in an educational style that serves as a summary, preparing the ground for presenting the thesis of the "late Althusser." From this perspective, this rewriting of history aims for a kind of "re-foundation" that represents an emergence from a "crisis" and the culmination of a rich intellectual path.
