About the Book

"This Day in History" was a daily newspaper column written by Najdat Fathi Safwat over five years, covering a significant historical event or the biography of a historical figure for each day of the year. In this volume, we read about the end of the Spanish Civil War, the beginning of the 1948 Berlin Blockade, Iraq's foremost singer and reviver of the Iraqi Maqam, Mohammed Al-Qubanchi, who sang for the Iraqi people in their joys and sorrows, and Stalin's election as General Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party. We also read about the execution of Danton, one of the most prominent leaders of the French Revolution, a man often credited with the primary role in overthrowing the monarchy in France and establishing the First Republic. His execution was one in a series of executions where the revolution consumed its own children. The complete work consists of 12 volumes, released sequentially.
