Thirty years ago, this study was written about the great Zanj Rebellion during the Abbasid era, focusing on its leader Ali bin Muhammad. It highlighted the political, social, and especially economic factors behind this class-oriented uprising. The study also examined the general and specific conditions that helped the Zanj withstand the Abbasid caliphate armies for a long time. It is well known that the rebellion lasted about fifteen years (255-270 AH/869-883 CE) and was a direct threat to the heart of power, as the events took place in Basra, which is not far from Baghdad and not a remote province of the empire. However, the rebellion eventually failed due to objective reasons, as time was not favorable for it or its counterparts to establish and continue as a form of popular authority or as an advanced mode of production.
