The Quran was revealed in seven modes, not only in writing but also in pronunciation, meaning, formation, and punctuation. Due to differences in dialects and accents among the Arabs to whom the Quran was revealed, Caliph Uthman ibn Affan compiled the Quran into one form. There are seven confirmed readings and three additional ones that complete the ten readings. All of these readings and pronunciations were passed down from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the Companions and Successors.
