This study seeks to answer several questions, such as: How was the authority able to assimilate the tribe? Was this assimilation or containment confrontational or integrative? How did Prince Abdullah, with British support, manage to crystallize his project of establishing a central authority and utilize the contradictions inherent in establishing a state within a tribal society?

A key feature of traditional authoritarian systems is their transformation of traditional tribal leaderships from ruling by customary acceptance to ruling through a separate state apparatus, without abandoning the traditional legitimacy of these leaders.
