The novel "The Swamp" by the Syrian author Hanna Mina takes place in a neighborhood known as "Al-Saz" in the Iskenderun Province after World War II. In this context, the French authorities, in collaboration with other countries, decided to hand over the province to Turkey. Simultaneously, a severe economic crisis known as "Kreiza" emerged, forcing people to resort to harsh solutions to secure their livelihood, including collecting insects for consumption. Due to consuming "snails" and the scarcity of other food items, a strange disease spread in the neighborhood, prompting the municipality to impose a quarantine on the affected individuals for fear of a cholera outbreak. This isolation, combined with hunger, disease, and death, significantly affected their mental state, leading to repeated suicide incidents among the neighborhood's residents—not out of aggression, but due to extreme hunger and their right to adequate food for survival.
