The Sentence in Arabic Poetry. A reader familiar with the Arab grammatical heritage will realize that the goal of this great science—grammar (Nahw)—is to study the sentence as meaningful speech that is complete and upon which it is proper to pause. This contrasts with morphology (Sarf), which studies the fixed structure of words and their variable states. However, a narrow understanding of grammar has led some to focus solely on declension (I'rab), turning it—under this misconception—into mere dry rules to be memorized for correct speech, a goal seldom achieved. Yet, Arabic grammar is much broader in scope; I'rab is only a small part of this science. In addition to declension, it includes the study of word order (rutbah), the phenomena of connection and linkage, predicate elements and complements, and sentence length.
