The Ruling on Acting Upon Weak Hadith: Between Theory, Application, and Claim

He began these treatises with a topic that was simple and straightforward for the righteous predecessors (Salaf al-Salihin) but thorny and difficult for later scholars, namely, "The Ruling on Acting Upon Weak Hadith." The author—may Allah preserve him—clarified the definition of a weak hadith and its categories in light of the terminology of *al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil* (narrator criticism and praise), the conditions for acting upon a weak hadith as applied by the imams, and the domains in which it is permissible.

He then refutes the broad claim of the impermissibility of acting upon weak hadith, responding by listing the imams to whom the practice of using weak hadith has been attributed.

The treatise concludes with related issues, such as declaring a hadith weak based on a specific chain of narration (*isnad*), whether the Hadith scholar must explicitly state the weakness, and the proper phrasing to use when citing a weak hadith (i.e., with certainty or with reservation), along with other delightful discussions.
