The Renaissance project between Islam and secularism remains a controversial issue within contemporary Islamic thought, dividing 'Islamists' and 'Secularists'. Despite all being Muslims, disagreements about the ideological basis of the Renaissance often stem from doctrinal aspects related to the belief in the effectiveness of a particular cultural model or from cultural dimensions influenced by popular ideas and revivalist methodologies. Psychological factors, such as fear of a religious authority akin to the Church authority in Western civilization, also play a role. Past violent behaviors of some Islamic groups and the exclusionary tendencies of some advocates for Islamic reference have intensified these fears.
