From "War Notebooks" that delve into various stages and different political, security, and social affairs, George Skaff chose this chapter to encapsulate a critical period in Lebanon's history. Although brief in time, it was rich with events and political and social developments. It was then described as a peaceful political revolution in an era of roaming military upheavals, proving that legitimacy, with strong decisions and stances, can confront illegitimate forces despite their control over public facilities and the absence of state institutions. This ensured continuity in transitioning from one era to another, maintaining the state's existence at its minimum through individual initiatives and exceptional powers with absolute authority, making the caretaker period one of the most productive, showing that the will to work in public affairs does not necessarily come easily or spontaneously but can originate from above with a strong national stance for the public interest, and a legitimate decision against armed forces fighting legitimacy. This book's distinction lies in displaying, through the eyes of an observing and critical journalist, what usually occurs inside the corridors of power, and when entering governance, he continues to view official matters from his journalistic lens, keen on people's interests first; a journalist engaged in public affairs without personal gain or favoritism. Governance did not offer him more honor than journalism, nor did it tempt him with the usual gains tainted with corruption's scent in most circles. He entered and left governance with a journalist's mindset, criticizing the state for every shortcoming or violation and demanding people's rights and defending the national public interest, ensuring the state serves the people, guards their security and stability, and protects their public and private rights and funds. The experience of a journalist in power is not unique, yet it always serves as a lesson and source of pride. George Skaff, born in Zahle, began writing in newspapers while still in school, and took up journalism founding "Al-Jarida" as a reporter, then editor-in-chief, then owner. He has published several books on Lebanese political thought, the first being "Lebanese Facts" in 1960. He was appointed Minister of Finance, Telephones, and Economy in 1976, and Chairman of Tele-Liban in 1990, participated in the Adenauer Foundation symposium in Bonn on Lebanon's future, in the Christian-Islamic dialogue conference in Vienna, and in journalistic delegations to many countries.
