The Other in Arab Culture, from the sixth century to the early 20th century, explores how Arab-Islamic conflict with Europe over the past thousand years led to distorted negative perceptions of each other on both sides. These stereotypes have been used to build racist attitudes that persist today. The author provides a comprehensive overview of how the image of the 'other' evolved in Arab culture, starting from before Islam, through the Andalusian occupation, the Crusades, European colonial invasions of Arab and Islamic countries, and up to the early 20th century when the Arab Renaissance movement was emerging. The author concludes in his book (The Other in Arab Culture) that each side developed its perception of the other in contexts of conflict, war, invasion, and occupation, without the opportunity to form an image in a healthy environment that would allow seeing the positives as well as the negatives.
