The novel revolves around the family of Sheikh Abdul-Maqsoud Al-Hadi Al-Mahdi, through the protagonist Muhammad Effendi Abdul-Maqsoud. He was a brilliant student who entered the Faculty of Law with grand ambitions for a bright future in the legal profession. After his father was paralyzed, he had to find a job as the family's condition deteriorated, eventually settling in an office within the archives of the Ministry of Awqaf. Muhammad Effendi did not sever his ties with learning; instead, he delved into Al-Mahdi's library, surrounded by dozens of old, yellowed books that opened up another world for him beyond this one.
