In this novel by Ernest Hemingway, born in 1898 and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954, we follow an old man who goes out in his boat deep into the sea to fish. He manages to catch a large fish and begins the journey back to shore, content with his catch. However, not all wishes come true, as ferocious sharks soon emerge from the depths to attack the fish tied to his small boat. Despite the old man's desperate attempts to save it, his efforts are in vain, and the sharks succeed in devouring the fish, leaving only its skull and spine.
