This book addresses the problem of Arabs and Muslims in their perception of the West. The author argues that our perspective and our very self are 'mutilated' because we are inflamed with criticism and sensitivity towards the West, while simultaneously showing excessive deference to our own situation. We either retreat to the 'pious ancestors' as a reaction to the West, thus escaping our reality to a time before it, or we superficially integrate with the West, adopting its ways without truly possessing them. In doing so, we escape our reality to what comes after, or what we imagine to be so. In all cases, this book delves into the heart of the pressing concerns within the Islamic world, offering significant contributions to ongoing debates and those that could erupt at any moment.
