This is the second edition of the novel by Iraqi author Awad Ali, which he completed in Canada between 2003 and 2006. The novel's events begin on the day the Marines enter Baghdad and topple the statue of Saddam Hussein in Firdos Square. It reveals the repercussions of the occupation on the characters' psyches and its reflection on their stances, and the direct and devastating impact of the resulting disasters on some of them. The protagonist, "Samer," is forced in the second year of the occupation to return from Ottawa to his city (Kirkuk) to pay a large ransom for his kidnapped brother, the artist "Saher." However, events take an unexpected turn, making Samer the victim.
