“In the unity and diversity is the essence of time,” noted Mahdi Amel a quarter century ago in his systematic examination of revolutionary thoughts and actions in our Arab societies, especially Lebanon. This critical reading of the crisis of the Lebanese Communist Party (and the left) seeks to draw inspiration from these words to highlight the constructive differences in perspectives on the causes of this crisis and its implications for the party's development and the leftist movement in Lebanon. At a time when the political, social, and cultural manipulation of sectarian phenomena has reached unprecedented heights, threatening the fragmentation of Lebanon into entities, the urgent need arises to rethink and examine what unites the diverse components and spectrum within the Lebanese social fabric. This unity should not be based on imagined or ambiguous 'sub-national' interests or identities but on real interests closely linked to the people's daily lives, advancement, and welfare. Without a doubt, creating favorable conditions for reviving a party like the Lebanese Communist Party—an entity transcending regions, sects, and external affiliations—entails an exceptional objective necessity and perhaps dreams worthy of effort and toil.
