William the Conqueror was born in 1028 in Normandy, France. He was the illegitimate son of Robert I, Duke of Normandy, who passed away in 1035. At just eight years old, William became the Duke of Normandy. His early rule was marked by violence and corruption, as city barons vied to control the city.
