Everything written about sectarianism to date reduces it to its political dimension. This book attempts to correct this error by performing a structural-historical dissection of the sectarian phenomenon, repositioning it in its rightful place on the complex map of conflict—a map that extends beyond politics to ideology, and beyond the national to the regional and then the global in our globalized world. The book gives special importance to the mechanisms of reproducing sectarianism, as we all contribute, consciously or unconsciously, to turning this infernal wheel. All this is presented in language understandable to the average reader and through the examination of two historical examples of sects that emerged and then vanished, to prove that the current tragic scene is but a fleeting moment in human history.
