Police officers and justice aides always unite to pay for the veal dish offered by Madame George at her restaurant in information, not money. Investigators crave the chance to meet the ideal nymph known as Professor Karim. From the novel's ambiance we read: "... As always, Mounier carefully weighed the least of his spontaneous-seeming statement: While police escorted him to the courthouse to testify before Mr. Investigator Tricar (better to mention his name to implicate him a bit), Jonny Winterstein, then detained, died in an accident during his escape attempt. After violently hitting the police officers accompanying him to the investigator's office, he managed to briefly elude their vigilant watch and fled, out of a window (no need to say more about the justice system's flaws). The fugitive reached an adjacent building's roof, where he slipped and fell from a height of twenty meters. He died instantly.
