Sam's idea was insane, and Georges followed it. A Greek refugee working as a director, who had hidden his Jewish origins, dreamed of staging Anouilh's play 'Antigone' on a battlefield in Lebanon. In 1976, massacres were committed in the country, and Georges decided that the land of the Cedars would be his stage. He made the journey, contacting militia fighters from all warring factions. His idea was to perform Anouilh's play on the front line. Creon is the Christian; Antigone is the Palestinian. Haemon is the Druze; the Shia are there too, along with the Chaldeans and Armenians. All he wanted from them was one hour of truce, just one hour. It wouldn't be peace, but a moment of mercy. A break in the war. A flash of poetry, and the silence of guns. Everyone agreed, which was beyond imagination. Later, Sam fell terminally ill, and on his deathbed, he made Georges swear to continue the project, to move to Beirut, to gather the actors one by one, and pull them from the front lines to perform this unique show. Georges swore to Sam, his friend, his brother, that he would do it.

Sorj Chalandon, born in 1952, worked as a journalist for a long time at the newspaper Libération before joining Le Canard enchaîné. His reports on Northern Ireland and the trial of Klaus Barbie earned him the Albert Londres Prize. In 1988, he published eight novels with Grasset, including his last two, 'Return to Killybegs' (winner of the Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française 2011), and 'The Fourth Wall' (winner of the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens 2013).
