Agostino was a thirteen-year-old boy spending his summer holiday with his much-loved mother at the seaside. During that time, his mother met a man and began a relationship with him, which had a profoundly negative effect on Agostino. He experienced a period of turmoil and sadness, beginning to open his eyes to the complexities of human and sexual relationships. These disturbances appeared throughout his books.

Alberto Moravia was one of the most famous writers in Rome, and many of his works were adapted into films and plays. Moravia wrote on all subjects, including the different classes of Roman society, politics, women, love, and sex. He was influenced by various philosophical currents and theories, such as those of Marx, Freud, Existentialism, structuralism, and the new novel.

Moravia emphasized description in his novels and always presented a central issue, although a pessimistic worldview dominated his writing. He blended this pessimism with the novel's core theme and contemporary social life in Italy. Moravia was not just a social and moral writer but also a witness and an heir to the Renaissance.
