When we read "The Fall" by French novelist Albert Camus, his last novel written before his death, we are reminded of that bloody period of world history, a pivotal era for reordering the world and learning from past events to prevent their recurrence. Through his novel, Camus condemns everything around him: he criticizes life itself, politics, emotions, love, humanity, death, religion, and God Himself. Everything surrounding him becomes fertile ground for criticism and bitter sarcasm in the face of what has transpired. This ultimately leads us to conclude that it is a novel striving for purification, viewing the artist as the unconscious conscience of the world. As such, he blames himself, just as he blames everyone for this horrifying fall!
