Description

The science of textual linguistics is one of the newest branches of linguistics, with its features beginning to emerge in the eighth decade of the twentieth century. Linguistic studies during that period witnessed a shift towards focusing on textual issues, making the text itself the primary subject of study.

The Copenhagen and Prague linguistic schools had a clear impact, directing critical attention to linguistics and utilizing it to develop the analysis of text and its grammar, moving beyond the traditional focus on the sentence. Textual grammar thus emerged from descriptive structuralism, which was based on sentence grammar.

This field is difficult to completely separate from other sciences due to its inherent characteristic of overlap. It draws most of its foundations and knowledge from intensely interconnected disciplines, allowing it to freely shape its tools. The results of its analyses then enrich these related sciences, clarifying many ambiguities in their topics and issues.

Following the popularization of Ferdinand de Saussure's ideas, his book "Course in General Linguistics," and his distinction between language (langue) and speech (parole), there was a significant impact on the analysis of literary texts and the study of linguistic system relationships. The Saussurean school also influenced the development of linguistic and critical methods focused on text structure and its construction criteria.
