E-learning methods rely on the use of modern communication mechanisms such as computers and their networks, and various media including audio, video, graphics, search tools, electronic libraries, and internet portals, whether used remotely or in the classroom. The primary goal is to use technology of all kinds to deliver information to the learner in the shortest time, with the least effort, and for the greatest benefit.
There are many advantages that technology has brought to distance learning, which are enhanced by the use of the internet. Among the most prominent of these are providing a lifelong learning option, the learner's ability to track individual achievement, the rapid updating and distribution of information, the availability of diversity and intellectual richness in the content presented, exposure to multiple viewpoints, consideration of individual interests, the availability of direct interactivity, learner control, and the provision of networks for communities with common interests.
Numerous technologies have emerged from the communications and information revolution that can be used in e-learning, including multimedia authoring software, CD-ROMs, satellite television broadcasting, internet technologies, and interactive video. All these aspects will be covered in detail in this book.
