Why have Muslims, especially Arabs, struggled where others have succeeded? What is the reason behind the opposition of most Muslims to ideas of progress and liberation? Modernity has yet to find a secure path in the vast desert of Islam, even though history's clock points to the start of a third millennium. This book attempts to demonstrate the impossibility of reconciling Islamic dogma with the demands of modern times. The author draws on the testimonies of men and women who have suffered the harshness of life in countries they thought were homelands, and also relies on his own experience to conclude that what is known as ijtihad is merely a reorganization of fundamentalism. He argues that freedom of belief, individual autonomy and freedom, gender equality, and other contemporary human issues cannot find reasonable answers within the framework of the prevailing religion.
