This book has two positive aspects. The first is concerned with specific practical situations, discussing their ongoing democratic processes at the cultural and political levels. The second deals with cases faced by third-world countries, including the case of Sudan. Needless to say, all these cases bring us back to situations we know in the Arab world to one extent or another.

Arab readers will find what piques their curiosity, especially in learning about the possibilities and difficulties of freedom in underdeveloped countries, as well as some of the products of totalitarian and authoritarian regimes. The testimonies included in the book from freedom fighters in countries across multiple continents (Latin America, Africa, and Asia) reveal a wide range of diverse situations. While it enriches many Arab questions, it undoubtedly dispels what might seem like an unrepeatable 'specificity'.
