"Writing during the countdown to an inevitable end is another kind of writing, and singing to the rhythm of death's approaching steps is a different song. Creativity between the jaws of death is an exceptional creativity that draws from the pure spring of truth." This is how Adel Mostafa described the book "The Consolation of Philosophy" by the thinker Severinus Boethius, published by "Roaya" in Cairo.

"The Consolation of Philosophy" is considered one of the most popular texts in Europe, after the Bible, throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It has received more translations and commentaries than any other book. Boethius wrote it in his cell during the months leading up to his execution in 524 AD, making it a mature example of prison literature.

However, classifying it as prison literature is not the book's main focus. Boethius established a dialogue between himself and Philosophy, blending poetry and prose to reveal intellectual issues raised by philosophers since the dawn of philosophy in ancient Greece. These are issues that thinkers will likely never cease to discuss, such as happiness, luck, the meaning of a homeland, the path of goodness, the relationship between wealth, power, glory, and fame, the pleasures of the body, and human freedom and will. When we reflect on these issues, we find they are as relevant today as ever.
