Issam Mahfouz is one of the most prominent pioneers of modern Lebanese and Arab theater during the sixties and seventies. This large volume compiles all of Issam Mahfouz's plays, both long and short, for the first time in a single collection. It also includes writings by Mahfouz on his own theater and theatrical theory, excerpts from articles by other critics about his work, and segments from interviews discussing his plays and theater in general. This makes the volume the definitive and comprehensive reference for Issam Mahfouz's modern, avant-garde theater.
Born in Jdeideh Marjeyoun, southern Lebanon, in 1939, Issam Mahfouz earned a postgraduate diploma from the Institute for Advanced Studies in Paris. He began working in cultural journalism in 1959 and taught playwriting at the Lebanese University starting in 1970. He was an active participant in the Lebanese theatrical movement from the early sixties, contributing several avant-garde plays featured in this volume. Throughout his cultural career, he published 45 books on theater and in various fields of literature, culture, and both Arab and foreign intellectual heritage.
