The book 'The Characteristics' is one of the most famous works in the study of linguistics and its philosophy, delving into the secrets and facts of the Arabic language. Authored by Ibn Jinni, who mentions in his introduction: "A work I have long observed, dedicating my thoughts to it, and drawn by its challenges, hoping to find a way to repair its neglects or mend its deficiencies. Yet, time only narrowed its exploration... I hold it in high regard, believing it to be among the most refined in the knowledge of the Arabs, and thorough in its evidences on what this noble language holds..." This book explores the structure and principles of language, starting with a chapter on whether language is inspired or conventional, and covering issues such as analogy, preference, causes, literal and figurative meanings, precedence and succession, and roots and branches, ending with a discussion on the errors of Arabs and the pitfalls of scholars. With this book, Ibn Jinni opened new doors for the study of Arabic language.
