The battles of the prophetic era, also known as the campaigns of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, began with the advent of Islam in the seventh century after the Prophet's migration to Yathrib (Medina) and the establishment of the Islamic state there.

During that time, Jihad was prescribed for Muslims, as these battles, despite their varying causes, aligned with the principle of religious war from an Islamic perspective. Furthermore, some of the emigrants sought to compensate for their losses, having left all their possessions in Mecca while fleeing persecution. The trade caravans of Mecca traveling to the Levant and Palestine would pass near Medina.
