The Kuwaiti author Saud Alsanousi's novel "The Bamboo Stalk" won the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (Booker) in its sixth edition in 2013. From the novel: Why did my sitting under the tree bother my mother? Perhaps she was afraid that roots would grow deep into the ground, making my return to my father's country impossible. Maybe, but even roots sometimes mean nothing. If I were like a bamboo tree, having no attachment, we cut a part of its stalk and plant it in any soil without roots, soon developing new roots. It grows anew in a new land, with no past, no memory, not caring about people's differing names for it. Kawayang in the Philippines, Khayzaran in Kuwait, or Bamboo in other places.
