The novel 'The Bamboo Stalk' by Kuwaiti author Saud Alsanousi was awarded the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (Booker) in its sixth session in 2013. From the novel: Why did sitting under the tree bother my mother? Was she afraid I would grow roots deep into the ground, making my return to my father’s country impossible? Maybe, but sometimes roots mean nothing. If I were like a bamboo tree... with no belonging... we cut a piece of its stalk and plant it, rootless, in any land... soon enough, it grows new roots... grows again... in new soil... without a past... without memories... indifferent to the differing names people give it... kawayan in the Philippines... khizran in Kuwait... or bamboo in other places.
