“The Alchemist” is a novel that has made its author one of the most famous writers in the world. An Andalusian shepherd named Santiago sets out to find his dream of a treasure buried near the pyramids of Egypt. His journey begins in Spain, passing through Morocco, until he reaches Egypt. Throughout the journey, he is guided by unseen signs. On his way to the treasure, many events occur that prevent him from continuing his journey, until he finds the means to move forward. He is robbed twice, works in a crystal shop, accompanies an Englishman searching for his personal legend, and witnesses wars raging between tribes, until he meets the alchemist, the knower of great secrets, who urges him to press on towards his treasure. At the same time, he meets Fatima, his great love, and a conflict brews within him between staying with his beloved and continuing the quest for the treasure. Thus, the idea of this novel is summarized in a sentence the king said to Santiago: “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” In this novel, Coelho revisits the theme of an ancient journey: Is our personal legend the discovery of our right to happiness?
