This book presents an alternative story about the dawn of the Iraqi state, proposing a thesis that the modern state of Iraq came into existence before the coronation of King Faisal. The book provides a historical account of the 1920 revolution based on original British documents and eyewitness memoirs from both British and Iraqi sources. In doing so, it confronts the effects of historical revisionism adopted by despotic governments and falsifiers in rewriting history. It is, in particular, a response or amendment to the historical revisionism practiced on the "event" of the 1920 revolution in Iraq over many decades. What Abbas Kadhim does is to counter this revisionism by presenting a new historicization of the event. The book starts from the premise that this revolution has suffered distortions on many levels, and its history was deliberately falsified by several parties for various reasons, across decades of successive political regimes in Iraq, both monarchical and republican. The 1920 revolution is a historical event that was used for everything except being a decisive factor in forming a unified memory and a collective identity for Iraqis. On the contrary, it became a divisive factor, claimed by anyone according to their political and sectarian agendas. While historical revisionism often crystallizes new memories and identities, this book serves as a defense against a primary denialist revisionist attempt, which was supported by the state during the oppression of the components of the Iraqi people.
