"When reading these plays, I was very impressed by their authors' determination to confront the contradictions and hidden hypocrisy in the city while they, at the same time, are full of questions about the people and physical places that form the fabric of this city. They chose 'Tales of the Soul and Cement' as the title for the book. I cannot imagine a better definition for a city – a place made of soul and cement. When I stood in the great mosque that morning in 2004 and looked at the blue sky, I was overcome with a deep sense of the relationship between cement and soul. In the midst of the chaos of material things, we find a sky and gain a space. If there was nothing material, there would be no frame to draw our eyes to the sky. And without the eternal beauty of the sky, we would not be able to notice the temporary beauty of our material selves. Soul and cement: both exist in the same moment, both are necessary to form a city, both are necessary to compose a play."
