Al-Ghazali was the most vehement theologian to attack philosophy and philosophers in his book "The Incoherence of the Philosophers," which was considered a decisive blow to them. Some time later, Ibn Rushd composed this book to debate Al-Ghazali on the issues where Al-Ghazali accused philosophers of innovation and others for which he deemed them infidels. Ibn Rushd's response claimed that Al-Ghazali misunderstood the philosophers' words, attributing to them statements they never made, or that he confined his critique to the words of Ibn Sina and Al-Farabi exclusively, or that he understood their sayings but erred in his judgment of them. The book (Tahafut al-Tahafut) is written in the style of philosophers and with the terminology of logicians. Ibn Rushd's clear bias against the steadfast mountain and vast sea that is Al-Ghazali is not hidden, describing him with sophistry and hinting at his shortcomings and lack of qualification. In all, it is a model of the profound discussions that have passed through our history and been preserved in our heritage.
