In his book "The Incoherence of the Philosophers," Al-Ghazali delivered what was considered a decisive blow to them. Later, Ibn Rushd (Averroes) authored this book to debate Al-Ghazali on the issues for which he had criticized and declared the philosophers to be infidels. Ibn Rushd's response argued that Al-Ghazali either misunderstood the philosophers' words, attributing to them what they did not say; confined his critique to the works of Ibn Sina and Al-Farabi alone; or understood their positions but erred in his judgment. The book, "Tahafut al-Tahafut" (The Incoherence of the Incoherence), is written in the style of philosophers using the terminology of logicians. Ibn Rushd's bias against the towering figure of Al-Ghazali is evident, describing him with sophistry and implying his incompetence. Nevertheless, the work is a prime example of the profound intellectual debates that have marked our history and been preserved in our heritage.
