Synopsis

Why did the narrator and his girlfriend Sylvia flee the suburbs of the Marne to hide in Nice? Where did they get the diamond necklace called the 'Southern Cross', which may have been a curse on them? Who are Mr. and Mrs. Neal, and why were they keen on pursuing the necklace's wearer and her companion? Who is Mr. Vilcourt, what was he doing in Nice, and what connects him to Sylvia? Through these intersecting mysteries, the author weaves a romantic novel whose charm will haunt the reader for a long time.
