Sunan al-Imam al-Daraqutni, also known as Al-Mujtana min al-Sunan al-Ma'thurah 'an al-Nabi (ﷺ), wa-al-Tanbih 'ala al-Sahih minha wa-al-Saqim, wa-Ikhtilaf al-Naqilin laha fi Alfaziha, is a book authored by Abu al-Hasan al-Daraqutni. In it, he compiled weak (da'if) and inconsistent (mudtarib) hadiths, making it one of the most renowned books of hadith for identifying defects ('ilal) and unusual aspects (gharib) of narrations.
Al-Daraqutni did not compile these hadiths arbitrarily; rather, he cited those upon which jurisprudential differences were built, discussing them and providing his commentary. The majority of narrations mentioned are weak and anomalous (shadh), which he follows with a critique explaining their weaknesses and defects. This makes the book more akin to a work on hadith defects arranged in the manner of a Sunan collection. It appears that al-Daraqutni's purpose was to clarify the status of hadiths related to jurisprudential issues and to demonstrate their unsuitability for legal argumentation. The authentic (sahih) hadiths included are typically mentioned because they contradict the weak ones he presented, using them as evidence for his classification rather than as primary legal proofs. This approach likely stems from the necessity he saw to depart from the prevailing method of citing hadiths related to rulings without carefully distinguishing the weak ones to be avoided—a crucial matter, as weak hadiths are not used to derive Islamic legal rulings (ahkam shar'iyyah).
