The word 'Sufi' is associated with what is hidden and esoteric. The turn towards Sufism was dictated by the inability of the mind (and religious law) to answer many of humanity's deep questions, as well as the limitations of science. Humans feel that certain problems trouble them, even when all intellectual, religious-legal, and scientific problems are solved by means of reason, law, and science. That which has not been solved (is unsolvable), that which is not known (is unknowable), that which has not been said (is unsayable) is what gives rise to the Sufi inclination. This itself is what justified the emergence of Surrealism. The primary claim of Surrealism is that it is a movement to say what has not been said, or what cannot be said. The essence of Sufism, as I understand it, is the irrational, the invisible, the unknown.
