In the 1970s, a significant wave of Jewish migration to Israel occurred from the Soviet Union after the Soviet government lifted travel restrictions on rejected emigration applicants. Approximately 163,000 migrants moved during this decade, but they did not necessarily represent the majority of Soviet Jewish migrants in that period.
